The Differences

  • 65% of Israel is barren desert, but they are turning it into a land of Milk and Honey but, we have a land that is fertile, a land of milk and honey a land of many resources but we are slowly turning it into a land of barren desert e.g. charcoal based industries, unscientific mining, deforestation, etc.
  • Even with 65% desert, Israel is one of the most developed economies in the world with a very high per capita income while our state is very rich in natural resources, yet majority of our population are very poor (more than 68% live below the poverty line – 2011 census).
  • They are constantly in a state of war right from the year they got their own country till today, yet they continue to grow stronger day by day, but we are a peace loving, fun loving, music loving people and our neighbours continue to take away our precious land with each passing year even torturing and killing our people bad ki bar jylla ki sdang pyni bor katba nang mih ki sngi ki por pyrshah ia ngi ki trai shnong e.g. ka jingjia ha them metor bad kiwei kiwei (newspaper reports).
  • They have a committed political leadership to protect and enrich their country, Israel and its citizen.

What is the Main Reason for this Huge Difference?

  • The FIGHTING SPIRIT OF THE JEWS, both Mentally and Physically and their communal love for their land and their people, apart from other factors.
  • The history of the Hynniewtrep people also tell us about the fighting spirit of the Khasis ( ki Rang kieng wait kieng stieh while not forgetting the role of ki Phan Nonglait) But somewhere in time this fighting spirit has been on the decline. But it is not too late to revive it and strengthen it.

The Threat

Nalor ba ngi lah nang tlot ka mynsiem iakhun, ki kolshor bad ki niam kiba wan ban ialeh pyrshah ia ngi hangne ha ka ri jong ngi mynta ki long kiba khlaiñ (aggressive and fundamentalist) bad lada ngim lah ban pynlong ia ka dustur jong ngi kaba khlaiñ bad kaba don ka mynsiem iakhun ngin nym lah ban ialeh pyrshah ia ki nalor ba ngi long kiba rit paid.

That is why this Ideology

No one can change their origins. if they do they become foreigners for the rest of their lives

Quotation from Enro Rubik

Examples: Moses who had a chance to live and become an Egyptian Pharaoh if he renounced his origin or identify himself according to his origin and live like a Jewish slave. Moses never denied his origins, he lived like a slave but he finally led his people to freedom.

In recent years, Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin was questioned and opposed yet till date she did not renounce her Italian origins although she is an Indian citizen and till a few years back she was one of the very few powerful women in the world.

We belong to the Hynñiewtrep/Khasi nation by destiny and origin and we cannot do away with this fact of life even if we change our names, our titles, our citizenship or even our faces through plastic surgery.

Definition of a Khasi (anyone who proudly identifies himself/herself as a Khasi within the state and outside the state as well, is a Khasi and declares himself a Khasi and who is ready to fight and defend the land and the rights of the Khasis, irrespective of his religious or non religious affiliation and even if we have to pay income tax. A Khasi includes u Khynriam, u Pnar, u Bhoi, u War, u Maram, u Lyngngam, u Mawshnram, etc.

Khasi is the language taken from the dialects of all tribes/sub tribes of the Hynniewtrep people and binds them together through it’s medium of communication between u Pnar bad u Lyngngam, u Maram bad u War, u Bhoi bad u Khynriam bad kumta ter ter).

So in this world today that is being increasingly divided and identified along community and ethnic lines, the identity issue is becoming increasingly important.

When we go outside India and we introduce ourselves that we are from India, people will want to know from which part of India and when we tell them that we are from Meghalaya they would like to know from what community. When they learn that we are from the  KHASI community, how would we like the world to respond and react.

  • With genuine respect and admiration because they know that we come from a community that is strong, progressive, positive, creative and enterprising and is respected worldwide for its quality, merit and hard work, (e.g. Ha ba wan u nong America, Japan, Israel, German shane, tip u ba ler ne bym ler, hynrei namar ba u wan na ka jaid bynriew ka ba khlain kaba seisoh ngi pdiang burom ia u, ngi ia khot bamja sha iing bad ngi kloi ban pdiang ia u kum u pyrsa kurim, namar ka nam (reputation) jong ka jaid bynriew jong u ka iaid ha shuwa jong u).
  • Or are they even aware of our existence, or …….. is there an indifferent attitude or a cold shouldered response because they know that we come from a community that is unreliable, unproductive and weak, depending on the Central Government for our very existence.

When I introduce myself as a Khasi to the world outside, do I do it with confidence and a sense of pride? Is there anything, do I have anything to be proud of when I introduce myself as a Khasi (except that I come from the wettest place on earth, but sorry, we have drinking water problems.)

There are three prominent individuals in our state, all three having Khasi mothers but one having a Mizo father, another a Naga father and another a Garo father, but all three prefer to proudly identify themselves as a Mizo, a Naga and a Garo although they live here in our state and do business/employed here.

Even though we come from a state that is rich in natural resources and abundant talent, yet we have failed to collectively  use this advantage to take the community forward

We are from a land of milk and honey, but we are slowly turning it into a barren dessert because apart from other factors, we have neglected to build our talented Human Resources.

And from the time when the Khasi man was u Rang Kieng Wait Kieng Stieh who raided the plains and valleys of now Assam and Bangladesh.

Let us now have an introspection and study where we stand today in all aspects of life.

After all these years what kind of community have we become?

  • A better community, the same as before or are slowly turning for the worse.
  • Are we a help to our own people or are we a burden a stumbling block to our own people’s progress.
  • Are we staying fit with time or are we dying before our time.
  • Are we becoming stronger day by day or are we being terrorized in our own land with each passing year.
  • As a state are we progressing day by day or are we declining day by day with more and more of our people living below the poverty line.

In another one and two generations from now, we will become Fore-Fathers (ki Longshuwa ki Manshuwa) to our future generations. How would you like them to read about our period in our people’s History. Will it be a Positive or a Negative period?

All along we have claimed to be Tip Briew Tip Blei, Don Riti Don Dustur.

Let us study together now and see how near or how far we are from this truth.

Problems

According to Dr. Mukul Sangma, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, while talking to the Press in 2013 after the swearing- in of three of his Ministers, said, “Meghalaya in comparison with other developed states in India, we are years behind. In comparison with developed countries of the world, Meghalaya is centuries behind”. Coming from this former Chief Minister, a veteran politician of the state, this clearly reveals the state of our state.

Poverty

According to 2001 census there were 49% BPL in our state. Now in 2011 census there are 68% BPL. If more poor people who have no political or other connections are included, there will be more than 68%. Instead of declining poverty as the years go by, we are having more poor people. As said earlier, Meghalaya is a rich state but the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing day by day.

Health

Till recently, Meghalaya was ranked 6th in mortality rate per thousand in India as a whole.

Has one of the highest infant mortality rate below 5 years, 39 per 1000 live birth.

Has one of the highest maternal mortality rate, 197 per one lakh live birth.

Very high pre mature death of Khasi men before the age of 50. Many people blame alcohol as the main cause.
